Devising from a Theme

Image
What is your theme and why did you choose it?  To help our decision on what topic to base our performance on, we had the choice of four major themes which were Social, Cultural, Historical and Ethical.  After discussing with my group, we came to the conclusion that we wanted base our performance on the major theme of ethical as we thought we could explore a lot of different ideas within this one theme and educate ourselves and the audience members the things that are not spoken about much as they are controversial.   What is your topic and why was this chosen? What was rejected and why?  After we decided on the theme of ethical, we then decided that we wanted to explore the ongoing and very controversial death penalty which is still going on in many countries to this day. The main reason why we decided on this topic is because we thought doing a performance on something like an abortion would be to easy and not challenging us...

Group Performance What inspired the choice of practitioner and why? At the beginning of the lesson, we watched some previous performances which were created by the previous years. By watching them, we all felt highly inspired of the different styles they used and practitioners. We were mainly inspired by Brecht and took elements from his work which included breaking the fourth wall, unfortunately we did not manage to include this into our piece due to the lack of time we had to work on this. We also really wanted to explore physical theatre, in which we did. We made physical theatre apart of our piece by doing our hand sequence at the beginning and our formation, another way we included this was when we were all pretending to get dressed later on in the piece.  What techniques were included? One technique we included within our performance was choral speaking which I feel we did effectively when we all said the line 'if only they knew'. I feel like choral speaking for thi...

Practitioners and Techniques 17-01-23

Practitioners  Brecht Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was one of the twentieth centuries most influential practitioners. Brecht questioned how the spectators reacted to drama whilst watching a performance. Rather than being invested in the plot of the show they are watching, Brecht wanted to emotionally challenge the audience by reminding them what they are actually watching and using societal issues within his work. He wanted his audience members to be engaged in the performance rather than just using the theatre as an a escapism.  Gecko theatre  Amit Lahav, Artistic director leads an award-winning and internationally respected physical theatre company since 2001. In todays lesson, we began by all choosing an object from the selection which was provided for us. Out of all the different objects, I chose a stethoscope as I thought you could experiment a lot of different ideas and I liked the fact it was not a generic object like a teddy bear or a book. With a variety of shapes making up this one object made me think more into how each different part of the Stethoscope could create a different idea.   After spending a little time with the object, we were then given a post it note and were asked to write words for what the object is used for, what does it look like and how does it feel. Out of all the words we wrote, we were told to choose five and from those five words we needed to create a phrase based on our object. The five words which I chose were hearing, circle, soft, heavy and squidgy.  After creating our phrases, we the connected them with a partner. I was with Zack and his object was money.   Even though o...
