Monday 16th January
In todays lesson, we began by all choosing an object from the selection which was provided for us. Out of all the different objects, I chose a stethoscope as I thought you could experiment a lot of different ideas and I liked the fact it was not a generic object like a teddy bear or a book. With a variety of shapes making up this one object made me think more into how each different part of the Stethoscope could create a different idea.
After spending a little time with the object, we were then given a post it note and were asked to write words for what the object is used for, what does it look like and how does it feel. Out of all the words we wrote, we were told to choose five and from those five words we needed to create a phrase based on our object. The five words which I chose were hearing, circle, soft, heavy and squidgy.
After creating our phrases, we the connected them with a partner. I was with Zack and his object was money. Even though our objects were completely different, we found ways to connect them through our moves. As you can see our first movement of me 'hearing' and Zack 'paying', we both lean out to the right and after that movement, we use my movement for 'circle' to transition to our next movement.
I enjoyed this exercise as it helped us all consider the many ways that you can create a phrase from just one object. The idea of improvising can a little intimidating for people, including me therefore the prompts from writing down all the words that made us think about our object helped me think of so many ideas on how to improvise with a stethoscope.
Later in the lesson, we looked looked at the stimulus of a picture of four pairs of shoes in front a puddle with a shadow a body behind each pair of shoes. We came up with a variety of different words which we though could connect to the stimulus. After a lot of discussion, my group came to the conclusion of going down the route of looking at gangs and how once your in one your 'trapped' When creating this short piece, we were told that it was movement only which meant we could not use our voice throughout the entirety of the piece therefore the piece was mime only. We came up with the idea of keeping our shoes off and placing them around the performance space to show there was no way out. The idea of the shoes around the outside, crated the backstory of seeing the outside of peoples lives and not the truth and what is within.
After this we then created another short piece which was vocal only, this meant we could not include any movement into the piece. We decided to keep with the same idea of gangs and how once your in, your trapped. To begin this piece, Raven performed a monologue which was based on the background life of one of the gang members. Raven continued to perform his monologue on his own up until the section of the monologue which shew the bad part of the life of a gang member, at this point, Me, Ella, Kayleigh and Zack began to rudely talk to each other, we progressively got louder and repeated ourselves up until the end of Ravens monologue where we went silent.
